Nine new positions for orchestral musicians

Stavanger Symphony Orchestra is growing. In the run-up to the opening of our new concert hall, the Orchestra has received funding to enlarge its complement of musicians in 2009. We are now announcing nine available positions, mainly for strings, with a view to making appointments in August.

New Concert Hall in 2012

In 2012 the city of Stavanger will be enriched with a new concert hall. This will contain two auditoria, one mainly for the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and one multi-purpose hall for all types of music performance. The construction started late 2008. The Oslo based company Medplan AS Arkitekter won the architect competition.

Steven Sloane and Fabio Biondi

The two conductors Steven Sloane and Fabio Biondi form the artistic leadership of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. Steven Sloane has been appointed the new Chief Conductor and took up his position from the 2007/2008 season, while Fabio Biondi startet his engagement as Artistic director of Early Music in August 2006.

New Audience Record

2005 was a very successful year for the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, with a new audience record of 77,366 and a total of 98 concerts. The orchestra went on its first tour to Japan, and Fabio Biondi signed a contract as Artistic Director of Early Music.

Tour of Japan 2005

In November 2005 Stavanger Symphony Orchestra toured Japan for the first time, under the artistic leadership of Susanna Mälkki.

 |
New Artistic Director

Fabio Biondi has been appointed Artistic Director of Early Music for Stavanger Symphony Orchestra from the season 2006/2007 onwards. He succeeds Philippe Herreweghe and Frans Brüggen and will concentrate on the baroque and classical repertoire.

Harald Sæverud and Geirr Tveitt complete

Two complete series of Norwegian composers Harald Sæverud (1897-1992) and Geirr Tveitt (1908-1981)have now been released by Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the Swedish record company BIS records. The 8 CDs with Sæverud's orchestra music include his 9 symphonies, his concertos and smaller orchestra pieces. 7 CDs, including a double CD, present Tveitt’s folk tunes from Hardanger, concertos, ballet music a.o.
