Till Eulenspiegel is the bright main character in a book of fun and coarse grain anecdotes from the 1300s. In Richard Strauss's compact symphonic poem from 1896, we are presented to the hero Till, in all disguises, moods and situations, and his way toward social destruction. The main character has two themes, which are already heard in the first paces: the opening melody of the violins and the famous horn theme, which follows immediately. This work broke new ground, musically speaking: never before had a composer used such a big instrumental palette, and used it with such great joy and freedom - in many ways like the character.
