The soloist of Sibelius' Violin Concerto is the very talented 20-year-old violinist, Johan Dalene. Tonight's conductor is the American conductor, James Gaffigan.
The Violin Concerto in D minor was written by Jean Sibelius in 1904, revised in 1905. It is his only concerto. It is symphonic in scope, with the solo violin and all sections of the orchestra being equal voices. An extended cadenza for the soloist takes on the role of the development section in the first movement. The soloist of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is the very talented 20 year old violinist, Johan Dalene. He is already making an impact on the international scene, performing with leading orchestras and in important recital halls both at home in Sweden and abroad.

Hailed for the natural ease of his conducting and the compelling insight of his musicianship, James Gaffigan continues to attract international attention and is one of the most outstanding American conductors working today.
James Gaffigan is currently the Chief Conductor of the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, recently extended for the third time. Since becoming Chief Conductor of the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester James has made a very significant impact on the orchestra’s profile, both nationally and internationally, with a number of highly successful tours and recordings. In recognition of this success his contract has been further extended until 2021.
Johan Dalene is a violinist from Sandnes and Norrköping who has quickly established himself as one of the most prominent young soloists in Europe. Known for his expressive tone and strong stage presence, he was named Young Artist of the Year by Gramophone in 2022.
Since winning the Carl Nielsen Competition in 2019, he has performed with orchestras such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, San Francisco Symphony, and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, under conductors including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sakari Oramo, and Antonello Manacorda. He has released several critically acclaimed recordings on the BIS label, featuring works by Sibelius, Nielsen, Ravel, and Prokofiev. Dalene began playing the violin at the age of four and has been part of Norway’s Crescendo programme, collaborating with artists such as Janine Jansen and Leif Ove Andsnes.
