The Orchestra Hall Fartein Valen has it’s name from the famous composer Fartein Valen (1887-1952) who was born in Stavanger. With its atonal tone language Fartein Valen is seen as one of the great Norwegian composers in the 20th century.

The hall which is both great and intimate has a classical shoe box form with 1500 seats divided in between orchestra, three balconies and the chorus balcony.

The walls and balcony fonts are in oiled maple, the floor is in ash. The Italian chairs are in light maple covered with blue purple mohair velvet.

World leading concert hall

The halls acoustics is optimalized for acoustics music and the repertoire of Stavanger Symfoniorkester. The acoustic is regulated by changing the halls volume ( the roof may be elevated or lowered by five meters, by acoustic reflectors above the podium and by sound absorbing carpets on the walls.

Acoustic regulation makes the hall excellent for concerts with amplified music, and for conferences. As a conference hall Fartein Valen has a capacity of 1200.

I was bewitched by the beauty in the acoustic concert hall. When we played the first tone we immediately had the feeling that we were in a world leading concert hall.

– Steven Sloane, Main conductor of Stavanger Symfoniorkesters during the opening season.

Thank you for two amazing days as a guts at Fartein Valen  in the new Stavanger Concert Hall. It has been a pleasure to play in such a beautiful, intimate and sonorous room, almost like an instrument in itself. Concratulations.

– Jan Garbarek in an e-mail to Maijazz 2013.
