• This is a one-year position with an eventual one-year extension, running initially from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023.
  • The choice will be made by SSO’s artistic committee, including Chief Conductor Andris Poga.
  • The fee will be according to industry standards and will be dependent on the projects agreed upon.
    The workshop is generously supported by Talent Norge.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the everyday work of Chief Conductor Andris Poga and guest conductors. Be present at and fully prepared to conduct rehearsals and concerts, potentially jumping in at short notice in case of cancellations etc.
  • Conduct educational concerts
  • Conduct off-stage music as required.
  • Carrying out sectionals, if needed
  • Assist with multimedia performances, recordings and streaming projects, preparing scores and proof-reading programme booklets

Requirements

  • All young conductors up to age 40 years (incl), who are living and/or studying in Norway may apply
  • Substantial conducting experience
  • Candidates must be living and/or studying in Norway

Live Audition on 21 November 2022
Up to four or five applicants will be chosen to conduct a live audition in Stavanger on Monday, 21 November 2022, between 10:00-13:00, on the basis of the digital audition.

The repertoire for the live audition consists of:
Brahms, Symphony No.4, 4th movement

Bártok, Concerto for Orchestra, 4th movement

 

About the orchestra

Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is one of Scandinavia’s most successful orchestras. SSO performs in Stavanger Concert hall, which is considered one of the best concert halls in Europe. SSO’s Chief Conductor is Andris Poga; Tianyi Lu is serving as Conductor-in-Residence. Recent guest conductors have included Karina Canellakis, Pablo Heras-Casado, James Gaffigan, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Dalia Stasevska, Fabien Gabel, Michael Schønwandt, Jan Willem de Vriend, John Storgårds, Kazuki Yamada, Kristiina Poska, among many others. The orchestra was founded in 1938 and consists of 85 musicians from 22 different nations.
